Phi Phi and Maya Bay from Koh Lanta: Is the Long Day Worth It?

5 min read

Yes, if Maya Bay and the Phi Phi scenery are priorities; no, if you mainly want an easy beach day. The 7.5-hour speedboat trip from Koh Lanta costs €41.67, carries a 4.4 rating from 306 reviews and combines Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon and Bamboo Island in one long outing.

Two other trips from Koh Lanta last nine hours: the full-day speedboat trip is rated 3.6 from 14 reviews, and the Shark Point trip has 0 reviews so far. That is why the 7.5-hour trip comes first here.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand describes Maya Bay as a white-sand arc enclosed by high limestone cliffs. It also places the Phi Phi islands within Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park. That landscape is the reason for the journey: this is not simply another snorkelling trip close to Koh Lanta.

The published 7.5 hours include the crossings and several named places. That creates variety, but it also means a structured timetable. If you want to settle on one beach for half a day, a Phi Phi circuit is the wrong product. If you want to see several famous landscapes and accept that each stop is finite, the long day makes sense.

The speedboat trade-off

A speedboat makes a multi-stop Phi Phi itinerary possible within a day from Koh Lanta. It also reacts more sharply to chop than a larger boat. The listing tells you the route and duration, but conditions decide the comfort and sometimes the sequence. Check the cancellation policy and do not assume that every named stop is unconditional.

The trip is most suitable for travellers comfortable with repeated boarding, sun exposure and a fixed group schedule. It is a poor choice for anyone hoping for a quiet, flexible day. According to the booking page, the minimum age is 4 and pregnant women cannot take part. Bamboo Island is only visited when the waves allow; otherwise another stop replaces it.

Maya Bay expectations

Go for the setting, not for a promise of solitude. The bay is one of Thailand’s best-known coastal sights. Since Maya Bay reopened in 2022, the national park has closed it every year from 1 August to 30 September; in those weeks no trip can land there; according to another operator’s booking page, visitors may then only view the bay from the boat. The itinerary marks the stops at Maya Bay and Bamboo Island with an extra fee, and the page gives the national-park fee as 400 baht per adult and 200 baht per child aged 4 to 11.

The Tourism Authority suggests November to April as the best period for Phi Phi, when rain is generally less frequent. That is guidance, not a guarantee of calm water. A poor forecast can still reshape a particular day.

What is included

The booking page lists a buffet lunch with vegetarian and halal options, a snorkel mask and a life jacket. Hotel pickup is optional; without it, check-in is at 8:30 am at Saladan Pier, and the boat is due back there around 4 pm.

Recommendation

Book the Phi Phi speedboat day for €41.67 when Maya Bay is a must-see and you have only one day for it. Skip it if your real aim is unhurried snorkelling; the Koh Rok and Koh Haa route is more focused on the water, while the Four Islands trip places Emerald Cave and Koh Kradan at the centre.
