Mu Ko Lanta National Park and Lighthouse: Is the Drive Worth It?
4 min read
The national-park headquarters is worth the trip when you want the island’s forested southern tip and lighthouse viewpoint, not simply another beach stop. The most relevant bookable option is the eight-hour private island exploration, from €53.84, because its description explicitly combines a national park with mangroves, Old Town and beaches.
Season, hours and fees
The Tourism Authority of Thailand says Koh Lanta Yai’s paved north–south road reaches the Mu Ko Lanta National Park headquarters and lighthouse at the southern tip. The seasonal closure in the rainy months concerns the park’s smaller islands: according to the Tourism Authority, Koh Ma, Koh Hai, Koh Rok, Hin Daeng–Hin Muang and Koh Haa are typically closed from May through October. The headquarters at Laem Tanod sits on Koh Lanta Yai itself and is reached by road.
The independent guide Thai National Parks gives the opening hours as 8:30 am to 4:30 pm daily and the entrance fee as 200 baht for adults and 100 baht for children aged 3 to 14; cars pay 30 baht, motorcycles 20 baht. The lighthouse stands at the western end of Ta Nod Beach, a 300-metre beach with shallow water. Check the park’s current notice before travelling, because fees and hours change.
Independent drive or private day?
Go independently if the cape is your main objective and you want to control the time spent there. The road makes the headquarters reachable, but “paved” does not promise easy parking, step-free paths or a short walk to every viewpoint. Confirm those details with the park if mobility matters.
The private tour is a different proposition: its eight published hours cover mangroves, Old Town, the national park and beaches, with hotel pickup. According to the booking page, about 1.5 hours of the day are a guided walk in Mu Ko Lanta National Park, including its trails and the lighthouse. Ask before booking whether the park entrance fee is included in the price. The selection also lists a six-hour Old Town and national park tour from €189.83, rated 3.9 from 11 reviews; it costs more and is rated lower than the private circuit.
Plan the day honestly
This is a poor add-on when your schedule is already filled with a long boat trip. It is better treated as a land day. Bring water and rain protection appropriate to current conditions, follow closures and keep food away from wildlife. A lighthouse viewpoint is not a promise that visitors may enter the lighthouse itself.
Recommendation
Visit independently for an unhurried park-focused outing. Choose the private eight-hour circuit from €53.84 when Old Town, mangroves and beaches belong in the same day, after confirming the precise park stop and current access.
