Koh Lanta Beaches: Long Beach, Klong Dao or Kantiang Bay?

4 min read

Couple walking hand in hand along a sandy beach beside two longtail boats, with a limestone island offshore

Choose Klong Dao for convenience near the island’s northern services, Long Beach for a longer central base, and Kantiang Bay for a more southerly setting near the road towards the national park. This is a choice of location and atmosphere, not a promise about daily swimming conditions. Tides, weather and swell can change the water at any of them. To see several beaches in one day without your own vehicle, the eight-hour private island exploration from €53.84 is the most useful tour.

The island’s beach geography

The Tourism Authority of Thailand describes Koh Lanta Yai as more than 30 kilometres long, six kilometres wide and home to nine golden-sand beaches. It also confirms that a paved road runs north to south. That explains the main trade-off: choosing a beach changes how much of the island you cross for Saladan, Old Town or the southern cape.

Klong Dao sits in the northern part of the west coast and works well when short access to Saladan’s services matters. Long Beach, also called Phra Ae, is farther south and provides a more central west-coast base. Kantiang Bay is considerably farther down the island, better for travellers who value the southern landscape over frequent northern trips.

Who should choose which?

Pick Klong Dao for a short stay, regular use of northern services or simple arrival logistics. Pick Long Beach when your priority is a broad beach area with a position between north and south. Pick Kantiang Bay when you are content to stay farther from Saladan and want the southern end to shape the trip.

Do not choose solely from a phrase such as “family-friendly” or “calm”. The official source does not guarantee lifeguards, step-free access or safe swimming. Check current flags and local conditions on the day, and verify the exact access from your accommodation.

Is a beach tour useful?

The eight-hour private island exploration starts at €53.84 and combines beaches with mangroves, Old Town and a national park. It suits a first overview, especially if your accommodation is in one area and you want to see several landscapes. Check the named beaches and time at each stop on the booking page.

Recommendation

Stay at Klong Dao for northern convenience, Long Beach for balance, or Kantiang Bay for the south. Book the private circuit from €53.84 only when the island-wide route—not a guaranteed day at a particular beach—is what you want.
