Four Islands from Koh Lanta: Longtail or Speedboat?
5 min read
Choose the seven-hour longtail trip to Emerald Cave and Koh Kradan for most first visits. At €24, it is the most-reviewed Four Islands option departing Koh Lanta on GetYourGuide, with 1,093 reviews and a 4.5 rating. A speedboat is the better fit when reducing time in transit matters more than the gentler rhythm and open views of a longtail.
The useful comparison

What the day is actually about
The route heads south-east from Koh Lanta towards the Trang islands. Koh Kradan is the beach-and-snorkelling part of the day; Emerald Cave is the distinctive passage at Koh Mook. You enter from the sea and move through a dark cave towards an enclosed lagoon, so access depends on conditions and the operator’s decision on the day. The cave is not a place to treat as guaranteed regardless of swell.
Thailand’s tourism authority groups Koh Ngai, Koh Kradan and Koh Mook south of Koh Lanta and highlights their beaches and snorkelling. That geography explains why these are full-day outings rather than short coastal cruises. The four-island label describes the route, not four equal stops: the time and character of each stop can differ.
Longtail or speedboat
A longtail gives you an open-sided boat and a slower journey. That is part of the experience, but it also means more engine time and more exposure to spray. Pick it if the boat ride itself appeals and seven to eight hours feels comfortable.
A speedboat shortens the crossings, but not the day: the speedboat listing runs 7.5 to 8.5 hours, the recommended longtail seven. It can also feel firmer over chop. Neither hull type guarantees a smooth day. If motion is a concern, ask a pharmacy or doctor before travelling and check the marine forecast and cancellation terms.
What to confirm before paying
The booking page is the right place to confirm pickup area, exact meeting point, park fees, snorkelling equipment and what lunch contains. Do not infer those details from a missing line in a short listing. Also check whether swimming through Emerald Cave is planned and what alternative is used when conditions prevent it. On the recommended longtail trip, Koh Kradan is part of only one of the two programmes on the booking page; select the option including Koh Kradan if the beach matters to you.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand lists Koh Hai (Koh Ngai) among the smaller islands around Mu Ko Lanta National Park that are typically closed during the monsoon from May to October. Koh Mook and Emerald Cave lie in Hat Chao Mai National Park in Trang, which in its recent announcements closed Koh Mook from 1 August to 30 September and Emerald Cave from 1 to 30 September. Between May and October, check on the booking page which stops the trip actually makes. Even in the dry season, a listed departure is not a promise that every stop will operate.
Recommendation
For a first Four Islands day, book the seven-hour longtail trip for €24. Choose the speedboat only when shorter crossings outweigh the atmosphere of the traditional boat. Travellers who want a more beach-heavy schedule should compare the eight-hour option before deciding.
